Combining beauty and utility: ceramics to covet
Pottery and ceramics are a foundation craft of the human race. Used and produced the world over, there's something tactile and comforting about the medium, and so many designs to love.
So for the ceramic connoisseurs, we've picked a few that we think are a treat to observe.
Feast your eyes on a realm of handmade objects where beauty and usefulness combine.
This is minimalism looking mighty fine.
The speckled salt pot above with matching spoon seems so crisp and delicious, it's like it's been made out of a toasted bagel.
SPEAKING OF OCEANS
Watery in colour but not necessarily in what you choose to put in it.
Weaving and pottery combine in these rustic hand thrown vessels. The red baby Moses might be our pick of the bunch.
ATTENTION TO DETAIL
Featured in Vogue Living for her leaf shaped plates, these sublime handpainted designs are by Andrea Zarraluqui. Her repertoire also includes motif of banana leaf, anemone, cactii and more.
Napier based Katie Jenssen's ceramics have a millennial meets pop art aesthetic that seems very current.
Mervyn Aitchison Much of my work has developed around wheel thrown contemporary functional forms. Working with the plasticity of clay and mastering the process of throwing is both challenging and inspirational. For me the challenge is to then give life and energy to the simple clay form by applying colour and design. The ability to take a glaze, a colour, a design and apply this to a simple pot is a life long developmental process. The process of then applying the flame to preserve our work for millennia is rather daunting. #clay #claybenders #aucklandstudiopotters
This jug by Auckland potter Mervyn Aitchison wins writer's favourite for the perfect marriage of colour and shape. So good it looks like a classic.
Riding the indoor planter trend wave without succumbing to idea-poaching, these little planters are delectably unique.
AMETHYST AND AGATE
Inspired by all things #amethyst, I guess I've been pretty in to purple lately🔮 I hand paint each of these geode pieces after throwing them on my wheel. The process takes many hours, but I've really been enjoying using some of my drawing skills on my pottery. After I form them, each piece gets fired in the kiln three times, all taking hours and days to heat then cool. Follow the link in my profile to snag one if any of them are calling your name😊 #handpainted #handthrown #handmade #modernmud #ceramics
Now for something completely different - gem inspired vessels. So shiny, so purple, so pretty.
The pottery line-up cannot be complete without Tony Sly's new take on the plain white plate. It's like Valentino re-interpreting a white t-shirt.
Kinda sweet, kinda creepy, this pair is a hit.
