Bargain hunters may have caused carpark chaos in New Zealand as they flocked to the annual Boxing Day sales but spare a thought for some of England's hardy shoppers.

Thousands hit the streets and queued for hours, all for a chance to snap up a post-Christmas bargain at some of the UK's best known shops.

Spare a thought, too, for the hard-working retail staff, many of whom were mobbed as soon as they brought new stock out to the hungry pack.
