Behind the scenes at a Playboy shoot
Not many people would think the porn industry is glamorous. If you think it is at all sexy, you are also dead wrong.
Dutch photographer Patrick Van Dam has created a book of behind-the-scenes images from Playboy photo shoots, called Playboy Behind the Scenes. Published in 2011 and awaiting a second edition, the book shows all the unsexy work that goes into a glamorous Playboy spread.
Van Dam's photos show a cheeky, honest and sometimes awkward side to the industry.
The photographer says his images are of "unexpected, undirected and natural responses; humour, disillusionment, absurdism and vulnerability in an erotic setting".
Van Dam's previous work as a director of Dutch Playboy shoots for seven years gives him the inside knowledge to reveal the more mundane side of the industry in a playful way.
Props are left in, cameramen point their gear at private parts and stylists adjust the models' poses. This awkward, close-up scrutiny of models' bodies shows just how bizarre naked photo shoots can be in real life.
Van Dam's past work with Playboy may have helped him score a contribution from Hugh Hefner himself, who wrote the foreword:
"In these compelling images, Patrick has captured the soul of the Playboy shoot and offered a true celebration of, and homage to, the people who make these beautiful things happen. Vividly here is the intimacy, the fun, and the dedication it takes to create the very best in contemporary erotica. And along the way, true to his calling, he gives the reader a peek behind the curtain of the Playboy lifestyle."
Whether you are a fan of Playboy or not, these images offer an insight into the work behind the gloss. The book was voted "Best Photo Book" in Communication Arts' Photo Annual 2012, received an "Honorable Mention" at the International Photo Awards 2012 and was nominated for the Photography Masters Cup 2013.
