Did you know that in Liverpool, UK, it's legal for women to be topless in tropical fish stores? Chances are, that strange fact is news to you. 

Weird sex laws like this and plenty more like it have been thoroughly researched and complied by a team, dedicated to their work, and uploaded to the internet for the world to see. 

The aptly named website,, lists laws that are now ancient and no longer enforced, as well as some that are still used to this day.

The laws extend across the globe but, unsurprisingly perhaps, the majority come from America, with individual laws in almost every state. Many will make you think, "how is that even a thing?"

In the 18th century, French prostitutes could be spared punishment for their scandalous work if they were willing to join the opera.

The use of chili sauce and similar hot spices in prison food is outlawed in Peru because they claim to have aphrodisiac qualities and could arouse sexual desires.

In Birmingham, it is illegal for a man and woman to have sex on the steps of any church after the sun goes down. Presumably, it is OK to copulate at God's door while the sun is shining. 

Six-thousand years ago, Egyptians would completely castrate a male convicted of rape.

In 17th century Spain, it was illegal for anyone other than a woman's husband to see her bare feet. A woman could freely expose her breasts, but feet were considered sexual and had to be covered in the presence of men other than her husband. 

Women are prohibited from walking around a hotel room in the nude. A woman may be naked only while in the bathroom.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, years ago in Tibet, the law required all women to prostitute themselves. This was seen as a way to gain sexual experience prior to marriage.

It is against the law to view movies containing simulated lovemaking or the pubic area of men and women. The law also does not allow kisses to be shown in any film that includes actors from this country.

In Pompeii, prostitutes had to dye their hair either blue, red or yellow in order to be able to work.


Females aren't allowed to appear in a bathing suit on a highway unless the woman is escorted by at least two officers or she is armed with a club.

Moose are not allowed to have sex on city streets. How the moose are notified of this law is unclear.

Cats and dogs are not allowed to have sex without a permit.

It is illegal to purchase or own adult fun toys. 

Making love, presumably with one's betrothed, while hunting or fishing on your wedding day is illegal. 

Male skating instructors are prohibited from having sexual relations with their female students. This misdeed, called "the seduction of female students," is prosecuted as a felony. This statute applies only to male teachers. It seems female skating instructors may have sex with male students.

A married man isn't allowed to take more than three gulps of beer while lying in bed with his wife or while holding her in his arms.

No man is allowed to make love to his wife with the smell of garlic, onions, or sardines on his breath. If his wife so requests, the law mandates that he must brush his teeth.

 A woman can't dance on a table in a saloon or bar unless she has on at least three pounds, two ounces of clothing.

Lingerie can't be hung on a clothesline near the airport unless the undies are carefully hidden from prying eyes by a suitable screen.
