This age group can be one of the most difficult to buy for. It's all about fitting in and being cool. The jig is up on the Christmas Eve visitor and mum and dad are under more pressure to meet expectations.

Technology is undoubtedly at the top of the teen Christmas wish list. While there are some pricey options out there, Essential Mum's Gen Z tech translator, Henry Cooke, was able to source some great tech gifts , not all of which cost an arm and a leg.

For family and family friends who are shopping for teens, it might be worth chatting to them about what they would really like for Christmas.

If the goodies they have their heart set on is a bit out of your price range, you can always give them a contribution towards the big purchase, or a gift voucher for the store they are getting it from.

Smart gift ideas

We asked a few retailers what they thought their bestsellers would be this Christmas and this is what they came back with:

Tech: For teens who love to read, you can't go wrong with a Kobo eReader. Most teens love music, so accessories like speakers and ear phones are sure to be a big hit.

Books: If the teen in your life has a role model they adore, why not get them an autobiography? Otherwise, there are hundreds of fiction titles that might grab their fancy.

Summer gear: Everyone wants to look good on holiday; some new, cool summer gear will be a hit with the trendy.

Stationery: Whether in high school, or going into uni, some fun, funky school supplies are sure to be used.

Think outside the Christmas gift ideas:

Gift cards and vouchers: New Zealand Post has a range of gift cards for a host of different stores for girls ( including Diva, JayJays, Peter Alexander and Just Jeans) and boys ( including EB Games and JB Hi-Fi) as well as for activities ( movies and ticket master)  and of course, music ( I-tunes). Your teen can save up and put the card towards something they really like.

Magazine subscription: Magazine subscriptions work out cheaper in the long run and for a family on a tight budget, buying the latest Girlfriend mag at the checkout every month may be a luxury. Having a mag delivered every month is sure to be a highlight for a teen girl.
