Dad Dave Smylie, mum Trine Kilduff, and brothers Cormac, Connor and Fergus welcomed a new addition to the family on New Year's Day.

A Hamilton woman had more to celebrate than most on Friday when she gave birth to her first daughter and was thought to be the first New Year's baby in Waikato.

Trine Kilduff had a baby girl at 4.53am on Friday at Waikato Hospital.

Kilduff had secretly hoped for a sister for her three sons - 15-year-old Connor, 13-year-old Cormac and three-year-old Fergus.

"I was standing at the end of the bed when she delivered [baby], waiting to see what we'd get," said dad Dave Smylie.

"It was a surprise, but a nice surprise."

Kilduff said her daughter, who does not yet have a name, was supposed to be a Christmas baby.

"She was due on the 22nd December but decided to take her time. That suits her personality, because she's so relaxed and chilled.

"We had lots of suggestions for names from the boys, but nothing sensible."

"I like Gandalf, but it's a no," said Cormac.

Kilduff said the plan was to keep trying for a baby until she had a girl.

"It was a bit of a gamble," said Smylie.

"We didn't know when she would decided to come, but New Year's Day is great - easy birthday to remember, eh?"
