US mum praises ex who 'doesn't pay a dime' in child support
For many families, co-parenting successfully following separation or divorce is no easy task. While remaining focused on the children's needs is the primary goal, doing so is not without its challenges. And that's why stories about couples who are working together for the sake of their children - who are getting co-parenting right - are worth celebrating.
US dad Jon Megason doesn't pay a dime in child support. Why not? He and he former partner, Jessica Singleton have a far better arrangement when it comes to their son - one that doesn't require the state.
"When my son needs new clothes, I just call him," Singleton writes in a Facebook post, describing her ex as "more valuable than gold".
Megason doesn't simply provide financial support when Singleton needs it, however. The doting father goes above and beyond to ensure his son - and his ex - are supported in other ways, too.
"This is a man who buys a bundle of kids' movies on Vudu so even I can enjoy them with my son in my own home," she writes. "A man who drops off the $50 box of pull-ups at my front door so I don't have to load him up and go to the store."
Megason, the mum continues, will take their little boy at "ten minute's notice" when she has too much to do "or just needs a nap". And, despite no longer being in a relationship, still listens to her cry when she's feeling "stressed out".
"This is a man who tells his son not to forget mummy's boyfriend when he lists his favourite people off the top of his head," Singleton adds.
The doting father has even remained on good terms with her family. "[He] still watches my sister's kids so our son can be with his cousins," she writes.
Sharing a photo of her former partner, Singleton captions it: "This is the diaper-bag-wearing, chocolate-milk-making, selfless, protective, generous, accomplished FATHER to my son".
But while the pair are certainly managing to co-parent effectively now, it hasn't always been easy. In fact, Singleton says, it was a "choice" they made together.
"The amount of obstacles we've had to overcome to get to this point are tremendous," she admits, before offering some sound - and candid - advice to others facing a similar choice.
"Stop giving excuses and come together for your children."
For the former couple, "forgiveness came easy to us for the sake of our son". And the consequences have benefited them all.
"Because of that, I see my son every single day," Singleton writes. "We always welcome each other's presence."
Addressing her ex, the grateful mum expressed her thanks to Megason for being a phenomenal role model for their son, "despite the foundation you once had".
"I love the amount of love my son will always have from you," she wrote.
Singleton's words have been shared over 130,000 times - and have inspired parents around the globe.
"I love this," one commenter wrote. "It is rare to find a guy who's an "ex" but totally involved and in good with the mummy. This is a good guy for sure, like a rare gem."
"Can totally relate," another added. "My son has flourished because his father and I get along! It's not been an easy journey but it's been so worth it"
While many have questioned why the couple are no longer together, given they get along so well, another commenter provided an insightful and spot-on response. "To the people who ask why they aren't together," he wrote. "Maybe they don't get along well on a personal relationship level and just decided to make whatever relationship they have about their child. It shows class, maturity and love for their child to make it work. Great job mom and dad!"
"My parents have been divorced for 15 years and are a way better team apart than together," shared another, adding that "sometimes people aren't meant to be together".
