While mums are busy organising and planning Christmas shopping for everyone, they often forget one very special person, themselves.

Maybe it is an afternoon of pampering and a special date night or a new handbag that hasn't been commandeered by the kids.

Take a few moments and think about what it is you would like for Christmas this year and make sure your loved-ones know what's on your wishlist.

They say change is as good as a holiday, so instead of the standard perfume, think about something that you would really like for yourself for next year.

For friends of mum, there are some great gift ideas that aren't expensive, but will be appreciated, some pampering bath salts, a voucher for a mani or pedi, even a home-made "time off voucher" valid for an afternoon of baby sitting would be a great stocking filler.

For new mums, a cleaning voucher to take the load off would probably be appreciated.

Smart gift ideas

We asked a few retailers what they thought their bestsellers would be this Christmas and this is what they came back with:

Something sexy: a sexy matching bra and panty set with some delicious perfume is sure to make mum feel good and a good gift idea for the man in her life.

Something sunny: Sun hat, sun glasses, sarongs are all a good summer gift ideas, especially if heading off on a holiday.

Something for home: Vases, coasters, photo frames are always a good option for a friend who is a mum.

Something stylish: A scarf, earrings, hand bag or a nice summer top will be a hit with a busy mum who doesn't have time to go shopping for herself.

Something to unwind: Think about books or DVD's. Why not spoil her with a box set of her favourite show that she can watch (without interruption).

Think outside the Christmas box

Pamper pack: A full body massage, facial and a half day of peace and quiet is something that mum will enjoy and dad and the kids will experience the benefit of. Dad's don't have to spend a month's salary on this either, you could make a book of vouchers for mum. Make it fun and get the kids in on the design, print vouchers for a free load of washing, dinner, washing up, garage cleanout, garden tidy up. Dad and the kids can have a think of what they could help with around the house. When mum cashes in on a voucher, she gets to relax and watch an episode of her favourite series while the chores get done.

Photos: Mum will have dozens of photos she hasn't had the chance to download from her camera, let alone paste into an album. Why not get her pics printed and put them in an album for her. This is something older kids could do for mum. Get creative; add stickers and descriptions about where you were and what you were up to.

Special collage: Dad might need to help with this one, but why not create an art work with the little kids, hand and feet prints, glitter, messages of love for mum and perhaps a favourite family photo will be something mum will treasure for many Christmases to come.

Something new: Belly-dancing? Pole dancing? Pottery? Decoupage? Maybe mum has wanted to take a creative class but doesn't want to spend the money on herself.  For one night a week, dad can take care of the dinner and kids  and let mum have the night off for her special hobby.

New beginnings: Perhaps everyone has been taking advantage of mum this year and it is time for her to put herself first for a change. Or she might be going back to work after being a full-time stay-at-home mum. A make-over, gym membership, or something for her new year is something that will mean a lot and she will use.  There are many websites where you can find vouchers.
