Labour of love: My unplanned home birth
Reader's storyJENNIFER GROWDEN
Our story starts at 2pm on Thursday April 19, 2012. I was a day overdue.
My husband was off work with a chest infection so we were sitting on the couch watching a movie when I felt the first little twinge, I wouldn't say it was a contraction but more like a very light period pain. I said to my husband, "I wonder if this will get worse?"
We sat and watched the movie and it wasn't until about 7pm when the first real contraction hit. My husband timed them and they were already three minutes apart so we rang the midwife who was in town but said she would come out as soon as she could.
She reached us about 8pm and said I was in labour but it was still early stages. She asked how was I feeling, I said I was feeling ok and happy to just stay at home for a bit. She left to go home and get some sleep and advised me to try and let my husband get some sleep as he was sick and would need to drive to the hospital at some stage that night.
I left hubby to have a rest and went to have a bath. It got to 10.30pm and the pain was starting to get pretty bad so I told hubby to ring the midwife and again she said she would come out.
She arrived at our place about 11pm to my waters breaking while I was on the toilet. She checked me and I was fully dilated.
At this point we decided we should get to the hospital so she rang to let them know we were about to leave and for them to run a bath for me. Once she got off the phone I decided I really didn't see how I was supposed to sit in a car so the decision was made: I was going to have this baby at home.
After about half an hour of pushing and our beautiful daughter Briana arrived.
I never planned to have a home birth, I actually didn't have a birth plan at all to be honest, but as far as a first birth goes, I have to say it was pretty awesome. I just hope the next one goes as well.
