A window display to remember
A Christchurch woman was left glowing after her partner used a jewellery store display to propose.
Hayley Ashmore, 24, could not believe it as she looked in the window of The Diamond Shop in Auckland on Saturday, with her boyfriend Jason Toth by her side, as they celebrated their four-year anniversary.
In a frame in the centre of the window display read: "Hayley Ashmore will you marry me?"
At first, Ashmore said she didn't even notice it was her name, as she took in the beautiful display surrounded by a bottle of champagne, a red rose and jewellery.
Ashmore said she had to read it a few times before it sunk in.
"I thought, 'No that's not my name'. Then as I looked round at Jason he was going down on one knee asking me to marry him. It was so unexpected. I had no idea he was going to do it. Even yesterday I still couldn't believe it," she said.
Ashmore said yes.
Toth, who had been planning to pop the question for about six months, described the moment as "perfect".
The Christchurch couple had gone to Auckland to take a break after the stress of the earthquakes.
Toth had hoped to propose to Ashmore, who is originally from England, in Europe but had to scrap that idea after he could not get insurance for the diamond he bought from the store, which was loose at the time.
The Diamond Shop managing director Win Charlebois said they were more than happy to help Toth, "a true romantic", with the surprise which would be "something Hayley will always remember".
