Stuff's wedding of the week
Emma Morgan and Blair Joines met on one fateful New Year's Eve back in 2006. After many years together and three proposals, the couple tied the knot earlier this year with the dusk-lit Peka Peka beach as their backdrop.
We'll let Emma fill you in on all the details...
How did you meet? We met one amazing New Year's Eve (2006). I was living in Auckland at the time and had come down to visit a friend in Palmerston North, we decided to spend New Year's in Wellington, so we bussed down. We stayed at the famous Wellywood Backpackers, and on New Year's night we were drinking in the backpacker's lounge when Blair and his buddies sat down with us and started giving me stick about drinking 'water', which of course I wasn't! After chatting a bit we went out to town. Unfortunately Blair wasn't able to get in anywhere and we parted ways.
It wasn't until I returned to the backpackers in the wee hours that I saw Blair sitting alone as he also lost his room key! We re-met again at the end of January - we had only spoken on the phone and texted since the New Year - both a little nervous, we spent some time together and talked some more. We had to make the decision to do long distance, which lasted a year, and then I made the move to little old Masterton where Blair was living. The rest is history!
Tell us about the proposal: Well it was over six years after we became a couple that Blair finally asked me. I had gotten annoyed waiting and had asked him, but being him he said no and that it was his job to ask. He asked my dad if he could marry me one night while we were visiting. Dad made him get down on one knee and ask me in front of him, of course it was a massive laugh.
The real moment happened on May 4, 2013. We went out for tea, then drove up to Mt Victoria, which was the first place we went as a couple. There were a few people up at the look-out, so we just stood down the base of the stairs. Blair started doing his normal comedy routine, telling a few jokes, then randomly started singing Mackelmore's Can't Hold Us. I had a little bit of a laugh and then he just popped the question - true Blair styles! I didn't believe him to start with so asked him a few times if he was serious! Of course I said yes and couldn't stop smiling for weeks! We drove home and called everyone on the way. Then Blair got down on one knee once home and put the most beautiful ring on my finger that we had chosen a wee while before - he had forgotten to bring it with him!
Location of wedding: Sudbury in Peka Peka.
Describe your wedding day: Beautiful. We were so lucky. We got married on Queen's Birthday weekend and history told us that the weather had not been the best. The week leading up to the day was not the best either, but come Saturday, the day was stunning. Not a cloud in the sky and no wind! It was amazing to see all our family and friends who made the journey to be a part of our wedding. The speeches were a hoot and the food was awesome! Everyone had a great time and danced the night away!
The dress: Isadora from the Maggie Sottero range in Alabaster from Astra Bridal. It was the most beautiful dress ever and I felt like a million dollars!
The flowers: We did the flowers ourselves and were a simple lighting yellow rose bouquet. My favourite flowers!
Highlight of the wedding: Seeing my now husband standing, smiling at the alter! And seeing all our amazing guests - they made the day great!
Was there any drama? My dress needed to be re-altered the week leading up to the wedding. Unfortunately the first alterations were done wrong, but the talented ladies at Astra Bridal in Wellington fixed it two days before the wedding! Then, due to it being a holiday weekend, it took my husband and the best man hours to get to the venue for the rehearsal, so everyone had to wait for hours in the cold for them!
The honeymoon: We spent a week in beautiful Queenstown. It was amazing to spend time together and do all the tourist attractions!
Your photographer and favourite photo? Our amazing photographer was Caroline from Caroline Atkinson Photography. She is so easy going and creative, and totally catches the moment. We can't say enough about her, we couldn't have asked for a better photographer! I can't pick a favourite photo they are all amazing!
