Stuff's wedding of the week
Summer, 25, met James, 27, when he was the cute courier guy who used to come into her office. He's now an aeronautical engineer, and they're now man and wife.
How did you meet? We met about five years ago when Jimmy was a courier driver and I was working in a nearby office in Wellington. Jimmy was carrying a big stack of parcels one day and I went up and held the door open for him. We started chatting, he gave me his address and told me to come over one day. I don't know if he actually expected me to really come over, but one day I just showed up and surprised him. Little did we know that five years later we would end up getting married!
Tell us about the proposal: We were at Lake Tekapo for the weekend of my birthday, and had just had a really nice dinner out. We went to the hot pools and then Jimmy suggested we go for walk down by the lake. It was the middle of winter and freezing cold but we wrapped up in our scarves and jackets and sat down on a park bench under the stars.
Jimmy started saying some really deep things to me and I was thinking what the heck is going on? Then he proposed and it all made sense. It was a great night.
Location of wedding: We got married at Boomrock in Ohariu Valley, Wellington. We chose Wellington because we are originally from there, and that's where most of our friends and family live. We looked at several venues but fell in love with Boomrock's spectacular cliff-top views and rugged coastline setting.
Describe your wedding day: After a night of no sleep before the wedding due to excitement and nerves, I was a bit worried about how the day was going to go. But once I was with my bridesmaids having our hair and makeup done, everything turned out fine and I started to relax and enjoy it.
The weather turned out beautiful with not a cloud in the sky despite what weather forecasts predicted the day before. The groomsmen got ready at the Hillcrest B&B in Ohariu Valley (the same place we also stayed at on our wedding night), and then headed up to Boomrock for some clay shooting and extreme golf before the guests arrived.
The whole day was fantastic. We loved being able to celebrate with all our close family and friends. We had our ceremony out on the lawn alongside the edge of the cliff, overlooking the ocean. Afterwards guests enjoyed canapés and champagne, some extreme golf, and petanque while the bridal party disappeared for a gourmet picnic and photo shoot amongst the farmland.
The reception commenced with delicious food prepared by Boomrock's amazing chef, and some entertaining speeches by our friends and family. Our first dance was heaps of fun. We had practiced over several dance lessons but were a bit nervous about how it would work in my wedding dress! The rest of the night was full of good company and some hilarious dancing with our guests.
The night concluded with a sparkler send-off from our guests, which was beautiful.
The dress: My dress was a beautiful strapless gown from Hills in Hollywood in Australia. I found it online in the early days of our wedding planning and knew that I had to have it. It was a bit risky buying it so early but I loved it from the moment I saw it, and even more when I finally got to wear it on the wedding day.
The flowers: The flowers were arranged by my sister-in-law who used to be a florist. She did a beautiful job using Roses, Calla Lilies and Dahlias which matched with the colour of the bridesmaids' dresses.
Highlight of the wedding: Very difficult to pinpoint just one thing because the whole day was really a highlight for us. I think our favourite parts were standing together in the ceremony, and the great speeches our friends and family gave (especially the impromptu speech by our little flower girl telling me that she loved me!) We are very happy that we have an amazing video and photos from the day to relive all of those wonderful memories.
Was there any drama? None that we knew of, apart from one of the groomsmen's pants getting caught on a fence and ripping! Luckily the best man came prepared with a spare pair of jeans for him to wear!
The honeymoon: We had an amazing honeymoon on two different islands in Hawaii. We had a great time and enjoyed eating lots of nice food, driving around in our Mustang Convertible rental car, and lots of sunbathing and snorkelling. The highlight was swimming with turtles in crystal clear water in Maui.
Your photographer and favourite photo? Our photographers were Jason and Aneta from Wedo Photography and Design. We had a wonderful engagement shoot with them prior to the wedding, and they captured the wedding day perfectly. Our favourite photo is the one of us standing amongst some broken pine trees in a secluded area of Boomrock. But it's hard to pick just one favourite - we love them all! We also received a fantastic video from Justine and Andy of Tiare Films.
