More of us will sleep more soundly tonight than on any other night of the week, new survey results show.

And those who toss and turn through Sunday nights are not alone, with work worries contributing to make it the most restless night of the week.

Results from a Travelodge survey of 1300 Kiwis and Australians revealed that Friday was our best night in bed, with 37 per cent saying they slept longest and soundest at the end of the working week.

Almost 40 per cent said Sunday night was their worst night of the week, and 25 per cent said it was at least partly because they had work on their minds.

Wellington sleep physiologist Helen Hills said that, as well as work worries, long sleep-ins over the weekend could be disruptive to sleeping patterns. "We recommend people get seven to eight hours a night and stick to a regular routine."

For people lying awake late at night, tossing and turning was not the way to go. "If someone's lying there for more than half an hour, get up and do something mundane for a while until you feel tired. Removing stressful or distracting activities from the bedroom, such as paperwork or television, could also help.

Survey respondents also confessed they had been catching up on their zeds in some unusual places. About 26 per cent of men and 16 per cent of women have fallen asleep during a meeting, more than 60 per cent have napped on the bus or train to work, 40 per cent have dozed off at least once at the movies, and 32 per cent during a lecture.

When it comes to which side of the bed we sleep on, we are creatures of habit – 71 per cent stick to "their" side, even when in a hotel.
