Well & Good
The astonishing proliferation of "thinspiration" and "fitspiration" on the internet has given birth to a dangerous obsession with "thigh gaps". We thought Tumblr was messing with our minds when we first heard about them, but were devastated to hear that celebrating the void between a lady's legs - and following Cara Delevingne's thigh gap on Twitter - is actually a thing.
Having a gap between your inner thighs is nothing to aspire to - in fact, with most women, it's a physiological impossibility.
Lawley was shocked when she discovered that a photo of her in underwear had been used on a pro-"thigh gap" Facebook page.
The image attracted 900 comments, where words such as "hefty" and "PIG" were tossed around, prompting Lawley to eloquently speak out against the trolls in an opinion piece.
"The truth is I couldn't care less about needing a supposed 'thigh gap'. It's just another tool of manipulation that other people are trying to use to keep me from loving my body.
"Why would I want to starve and weaken my natural body size? I'm not saying women who have it naturally are unattractive. But I would have to change my entire frame just to achieve something that seems so trivial."
Lawley went on to point out that having a "thigh gap" doesn't necessarily mean you're fit and athletic. Why, when it comes to her legs, she's after the opposite...
"I want my thighs to be bigger and stronger. I want to run faster and swim longer. I suppose we all just want different things, but women have enough pressure as it is without the added burden of achieving a 'thigh gap'.
"The last thing I would want for my future daughter would be to starve herself because she thought a 'thigh gap' was necessary to be deemed attractive."
After all the talk of "thigh gaps" and "hot-dog legs" this year it's hard to pick what small part of a women's body will become worthy of fetishizing on a Tumblr next. The length or our earlobes? The curvature of our feet?
