To the familiar view of swimmers and kite surfers on Nelson's harbour, now add paddle board yoga classes.

This new trend sees practitioners paddle out on the water and then perform stretches while balancing on a board.

Yoga instructor Jane Pascoe said that doing a downward-facing dog at sea has "the added challenge of being on an unstable surface".

The workout of paddling to class and then avoiding an impromptu swim set this style of yoga apart from others, she said.

"I'm not trying to get people into the water, that doesn't happen very often," said Ms Pascoe.

She added that no experience was needed in either paddle boarding or yoga to take part.

Paddle board yoga has been steadily catching on worldwide, as people look for the next new way to practise the ancient exercise, she said.

While still an emerging activity in Nelson, Ms Pascoe insists the ones who have a go keep coming back because most of her classes are full of regulars.

"There's a lot of interest as it's such a new concept, people get a bit more hooked once they try it," she said.

Her classes are usually kept small - around five or six people to ensure safety, and she works with Kite Surf Nelson which supplies boards at a cheaper rate to people who need them.

As well as doing yoga in one of Nelson's more tranquil settings, Ms Pascoe said there was one major benefit to her classes.

"When you get really hot and sweaty you can just go for a swim."
