Obesity normal say women

Obesity could now be "so common it is perceived as normal", an Australian researcher says after a survey of pregnant women showed many were oblivious to being overweight.
The Brisbane study involved 412 women and it found 30 per cent were either overweight or obese before they fell pregnant.
Associate Professor Leonie Callaway said when the women were asked what they thought about their weight, 36 per cent responded it was normal.
Only 16 per cent who were rated in the top-most category because of their high Body Mass Index (BMI) score considered themselves to be obese.
"This may result in women having an inaccurate picture of the potential risk their weight adds to a future pregnancy," said Dr Callaway, who works at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospitals and the University of Queensland's school of medicine.
"It is also possible that obesity is now so common it is perceived as normal."
More than half of the overweight women said they had a health check-up before falling pregnant. Just 17 per cent could remember their doctor telling them they should lose weight.
Dr Callaway said the research highlighted the importance of doctors calculating the BMI of patients and advising them of the increased risk that extra weight would pose to a developing baby.
The research is published in the Medical Journal of Australia, due out today, where an accompanying editorial lists the risks of being overweight.
Professor Marc Keirse, who is an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Flinders University in Adelaide, said it could make conception more difficult.
He said it could lead to gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and delivery problems.

i want to know how long its going to be before we can start hassling the fatties like we do with the smokers. WE KNOW BEING OVERWEIGHT IS AS BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH AS SMOKING.
when will it be socially acceptble to tell people they are fat?
@ #18
Well said. Everyone should get on a treadmill, regardless of if you're fat or not. It's a healthy thing to do and it will decrease the strain on our health system caused by unfit, unhealthy people being too lazy to look after themselves.
Come on people! Get those booties moving!
pfft A decent health professional would take more than BMI to claim you are fat anyway (if you go to a health professional for the reason anyway). Last time I did something similar my doctor took BMI, body fat %, body fat distribution etc.
BTW BMI inaccuracy is a known issue because of the muscle vs fat issue. Also there are multiple BMI charts, which are different from each other. They are established, cheap and fast way to measure obesity but it is also easily fooled.
I agree obesity has been "normalised". It's like anything you're constantly exposed to, it becomes acceptable. Unfortunately the latest fashions don't take into account these new "normal" body shapes and consequently there are some truly appalling sights out there! Don't people look in a mirror before they leave the house? I shudder to think what some of these young girls are going to look like in 20 - 30 years time (and a couple of kids later)- presuming they'll still be alive.
Laziness has caused this obesity epidemic sweeping the nation, people come home from work and sit in front of the TV eat their chips and process fatty foods and say "I hate being fat". But refuse to do anything about it, save for complaining.
People need to get a grip on themselves and step up to the plate; don their trainers and hit the road with, their dogs in needs-be - now there is a novel concept - that surely wont catch on.
I lost 23kg in six months, the old fashioned way - exercising and eating a balanced diet. Then I had a child and put on 10kg, now I have taken myself out the back giving myself seven stiff upper cuts. and I am taking it off again, I know my dogs like it, and it puts the wee person too sleep as well. For those who feel the need to carry their dogs in carry bag or pram, you may need to run or exercise on your own - and buy yourself some tissues! the rest of us dont want to hear about your sad movies anymore.
People should stop complaining about retaining water (more like cakes, chips and pies) being big boned, and do someting about it.
Of course they think it's normal. They got pregnant, didn't they?
just adding to what star #20 said, aswell as it not accounting for bone structure it also doesnt account for muscle mass. if any body builder took that test they would instantly be labelled as morbidly obese.
Perhaps 30% of men prefer fat women, which is why they are pregnant.
as #10 said % body fat is the only accurate way to measure obesity. BMI has a correlation with % body fat. But BMI is flawed as it does to take into account width of bone structure.
