The lowdown: Affordable workout gear
SARAH MACKENZIE & NYREE MCFARLANE
THE TIGHT TEE: Spliced Active Top, $15 (at 50 per cent off) from Postie Plus. For those of you who are all about singlets because you hate working out in baggy, cumbersome T-shirts but sometimes find yourself a touch embarrassed on those in-between shaving days.
THE SPORTS BRA: CottonOn Active Body Bra, $24.95 from CottonOn and Shock Absorber Ladies Active D+ Underwire Bra, $46.45 from wiggle.co.uk. Exhibit A: It's cheap as chips, funky-coloured and functional - perfect for the smaller ladies. And Exhibit B: It may not be the prettiest thing, but for bigger ladies craving support this maximum impact sports bra is breathable, comfortable and won't break the bank.
COVER UP: Fluoro pink jacket, $20 at Kmart. This snug-fit jacket is a) pretty styling b) so bright it's a great safety tool for dawn or dusk runs and c) light enough that it'll keep you from freezing but without turning your daily constitutional into a Bikram run.
THE RACER-BACK: Active Intent Women's Racer, $20 at The Warehouse. These mesh/cotton singlets look pretty cool, and while we'd normally pooh-pooh a drawstring bottom on a top, in this case it's super handy if you want your top to stay down while your arms fly through the air mid aerobics class.
THE CAPRIS: Active Intent women's capris, $12 at The Warehouse. Once you've worked out in don't-get-in-your-way leggings, you'll never want to wear your old saggy, swingy jogging pants ever again.
THE STORAGE: Mi-Pac Camo Leaf Backpack, $33.60 at Asos.com. While Team L&S love our Country Road over the shoulder 'giant baguette' bags, they're not handy for the times we want to run into the gym, do a class, and then shower and head straight to the office. This backpack is the perfect home-gym-work-home solution.
THE SHORTS: Running Short, $24.95 from CottonOn. Shorts are to your gym gear wardrobe what chocolate is to life - essential. These ones come in over ten colours and patterns and are so reasonably priced, you could buy a pair for every day of the week.
MORE CAPRIS: Two-tone workout leggings, $20, Kmart. If you love to colour coordinate with your bright Nike sneakers, Kmart offers these great options, which are crafted from a thick yet stretchy material.
JOCK-CHIC: Active Intent Stripe Sleeve Tee, $20 at The Warehouse. We love this bright tee - and a loose top half is definitely a good option for those of you new to tight bottoms in the gym. Skin-tight across the whole body can sometimes be a bit nerve-wracking!
THE FULL-LENGTH TIGHTS: Adidas Response Long Tight, $54.19 from wiggle.co.uk. If you're not so into the way capri tights cut your legs in two, but want something more covered up than shorts, full-length tights are your answer. This pair is made from that great fabric that will keep you dry plus the reflective details are perfect for that evening run. All for under 55 bucks? Sold.

The will to get active comes down to a number of things, but I think we can all agree that if you feel good in your workout clothes, you're far more likely to get your sweat on.
With all the hubbub surrounding overpriced gym gear and whether it's really worth it, we thought we'd scour the stores (both online and off) to find workout clothes that won't break the budget.
From tights that won't give up the ghost after one pavement pound, to sports bras that actually provide support - we've pinpointed the pieces that will keep you comfy while you get active.
We haven't touched on shoes due to the personal nature of footwear, but we recommend getting expert advice to ensure correct fit and support.
