"I like his entire set-up. A clean chest, meat on him and his hind quarters are great," he said, describing the bull, rather than rugby and league player Sonny Bill Williams.

"He is a practical sort of bull that would do the job out in hill country."

O'Neill said even as a calf, he could see Sonny Bill was special.

"You look out in the paddock and you see it's bigger, it has got more hind quarters and it's smoother. Sometimes you don't get it right. But he was above the other calves."

Okahu Sonny Bill was born on August 24, 2012.

"At 900 kilograms, he is not fully grown. He is not yet fully mature, so he'll grow some more," O'Neill said.

The bull that took second place in the champion of champions contest was angus bull Merchiston Generate from Richard Rowe's Marton stud.

"He has a lot of length and moved well. He's a wonderful bull," said angus breed judge Patrick Crawshaw.

The bull was sold for $17,000.

The top-priced angus bull was Tarangower Zeus 12002, which sold for $17,500.
