A Dannevirke man who tried to evade police by hiding in a couch will appear in the Palmerston North District Court tomorrow.

The man, in his 20s, was wanted by police following a domestic violence incident last week.

Dannevirke Senior Sergeant Nathan Davis said police were making inquiries at a Dannevirke house about the man on Sunday, when their attention was drawn to a sofa.

It appeared the man had opened up the upholstery at one end and climbed inside the frame, where he was found hiding by police.

He has been remanded in custody on charges including common assault and assault on a child.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
