Southland Sharks extend winning run to seven
The Southland Sharks have extended their winning streak in the 2014 National Basketball League to seven with a 91-83 victory over the Manawatu Jets in Invercargill tonight.
The Southland team has overcome plenty of adversity in recent weeks which included three players being suspended for off-court issues and Gareth Dawson stood down for the season after a positive drug test.
However, those dramas haven't stopped the Sharks' impressive winning ways as they turned in another gutsy performance in Invercargill to down Manawatu.
They did so with a couple of new additions.
Puke Lenden put his hand up to step in and help his good friend and Sharks coach Paul Henare to lineup for Southland. While Tai Wesley has signed on for the remainder of the season and looks to be a more than adequate replacement for Dawson.
Wesley provided the Sharks with a big man under the basket and was more than happy to also provide his team with another shooting option.
He grabbed seven rebounds and scored 15 points.
Amongst all the player losses in the past couple of games, senior player Luke Martin has stepped up in major way. Tonight in turned in another big showing which included a 20 point haul.
Sharks import Brian Conklin was again clearly troubled by an ankle injury but he continues to press on for his team playing 34 minutes and contributing 15 rebounds.
Kevin Braswell was as usual another standout for the Sharks with a game high 27 points and chipping in with eight rebounds.
For the Jets as expected Nick Horvath was a strong presence under the basket with his outstanding 19 rebounds and 24 points.
His team, however, couldn't deliver a repeat from the night before when they toppled the Otago Nuggets.
The Sharks will have little time to recover as they eye a showdown against the Nuggets Dunedin tomorrow night.
