The Bay Hawks' eight-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Manawatu Jets, with an 88-84 loss in Palmerston North tonight.

Manawatu's late-season form continued, having won three of their last four games, and they shut out the competition leaders, getting out to a big lead in the fourth quarter and then hanging on to win despite a Hawks comeback.

The Jets defended strongly against their classy opponents and after a poor shooting effort last week, they improved to shoot at 50 per cent from the floor, compared with the Hawks' 45.

The Jets raced out of the blocks and were up 16-4 after only a couple of minutes, but a Hawks run saw them go into the front, one of 12 lead changes.

However, Manawatu kept up the pace and kicked on from their 44-40 halftime lead and 65-59 advantage after three quarters to be up 81-70 in the fourth.

The visitors made a good run home but Dustin Scott pulled the Hawks back into it with a three-pointer with 30 seconds to put just one between the sides.

The Hawks then fouled Jets forward Jeremiah Trueman, who iced both free throws, before Hawks captain Paora Winitana missed a lay up off which opposing swingman Paul Jones grabbed the rebound and scored at the other end to seal the win.

Jones led all scorers with 29 points, Nick Horvath had 13 points and 15 rebounds and Brandon Jenkins scored 13 points and had six assists.

For the Hawks Everard Bartlett top scored with 20 points, including four three pointers, import Dustin Scott scored 18 and Tall Black Jarrod Kenny had 13.

Manawatu Jets 88 (Paul Jones 29, Brandon Jenkins 13, Nick Horvath 13/15, Alonzo Burton 11) Bay Hawks 84 (Everard Bartlett 20, Dustin Scott 18, Jarrod Kenny 13, Kareem Johnson 12) Q1: 20-19, HT: 44-40, Q3:65-59, FT: 88-84.
