Palmerston North Police have arrested a 26-year-old man after a machete attack in the central city.

Detective Sergeant Dave Thompson said the attack occurred about 1.10pm on Friday, in Main Street.

The 26-year-old Palmerston North man had reportedly been arguing with a 27-year-old man before allegedly striking the other man with a machete.

The man suffered a serious laceration to his arm and was taken to Palmerston North Hospital.

It is believed the men knew each other.

The man will appear in the Palmerston North District Court tomorrow on a charge of wounding with intent to injure.

He also faces a number of unrelated charges.

Thompson said police would like to hear from witnesses to the attack, which took place at a busy time of day, when there would have been a lot of people out and about.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Rankin at Palmerston North Police on 351 3600.

Information can also be provided via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
