A woman was cut from her car and taken to hospital with a serious leg injury after a crash on the outskirts of Palmerston North this evening.

Emergency services were called to the two-car crash on the corner of Ruapehu Dr and Summerhill Dr shortly after 4.30pm after a Mitsubishi Chariot Grandis and a Toyota Corolla collided.

Four people were injured - three suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene and one woman had to be cut from her vehicle after being trapped by airbags.

She was taken to hospital with a serious leg injury, police central communications acting shift inspector Chris Tate said.

The road was blocked for more than an hour and reopened about 5.45pm.
