A Wellington man in his mid-30s suffered spinal injuries when the quad bike he was riding crashed in the Tararuas early last night.

It happened about 7pm near the Kapiti backcountry Waiotauru Hut.

Attempts to lift the man out last night using the Westpac Trust rescue helicopter had to be put on hold because of bad weather.

But the helicopter did manage to drop a doctor and a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic off near the site to attend to the man overnight.

A Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic team also tramped in to the area last night.

Wellington Free Ambulance operations director Mark Shakespeare said the man was taken to the Waiotauru Hut overnight where he was kept warm and stable.

"The doctor who treated him is querying a potential spinal fracture so he suffered a serious (status three) injury," Shakespeare said.

The helicopter managed to lift the man out this morning, following a break in the weather and he was dropped off at Wellington Hospital at 9:20am.

Westpac helicopter spokesman Dave Greenberg said the man was suffering from back and chest pains when he was picked up.

"It was a cold long night for all of them out there," Greenberg said.
