Hooker Bryn Templeman is bound for southwest Germany next month.

After playing for the Manawatu Turbos for the past four seasons, the 26-year-old Kia Toa captain has signed to play a season for the Pforzheim club in the Rugby-Bundesliga.

Whether he will return to help out Kia Toa next season is unclear. If he does come back it would be in June for the second round of club rugby, or else he and his partner might decide to see more of the world.

When Templeman knew he wasn't going to be contracted this season, it gave him a chance to try something different: "You have got to take your opportunities, take on a new challenge and refresh," he said.

His initial contact was former Feilding Old Boys-Oroua and Manawatu B player Afa Tauli and then Dannevirke's Nigel Walshe, who played for Pforzheim, and Turbos prop Jared Brock, who played for 1880 Frankfurt.

Pforzheim play in the top German division and won the North Sea Cup this season for the first time, against the best from Belgium and the Netherlands. Like Manawatu they play in green and white and were the Bundesliga runners-up to Heidelberg this year.

While there he will be allowed to finish his UCOL studies, three papers to finish his degree in exercise and sports science.

Templeman will ensure everything is in order this time.

In November, 2009, he went to join the Chobham club in Surrey, England, only to be turned around at Heathrow airport because, when it was discovered he was a paid Manawatu player, he didn't have a sporting visa.

"I don't want another 54-hour round trip," he chuckled.

He was held for six hours, questioned, had his passport confiscated, his bags searched and was then escorted on to a plane to New Zealand. He came home and played cricket for the Manawatu Hawke Cup team.

Templeman has already told Manawatu coach Mike Mason he won't be available to help defend the Hawke Cup in the summer.

He captained Kia Toa on Saturday in his fourth Hankins Shield final and was in the winning team in 2008, 2009 and last year.

After 24 games for Manawatu, last year he shared the reserve hooking duties with Nick Grogan.
