A heavy rain warning is in place for Gisborne and northern Hawke's Bay today.
A front moving slowly north was expected to bring heavy rain and cool southerlies to these parts, MetService said.
Heaviest falls were forecast in Gisborne and northern Hawke's Bay, with 100 to 150mm expected.
Thunderstorms were possible from late morning to evening.
A road snowfall warning is in place for the Desert Road, with rain expected to turn to snow above 800 metres at some point today, MetService said.
From this morning to early evening, 10-15cm could accumulate above about 1000m.
Further north, occasional showers, some heavy and possibly thundery, were forecast for Auckland and Northland.
Scattered rain from Waikato to Manawatu would clear this afternoon, and in Wellington southerlies would die away, making way for fine spells.
