LATEST: All routes through the central North Island have been closed tonight by snow.
The NZTA announced just before 8pm that State Highway 1 had been closed between Taihape and Rangipo about 8pm.
The closure of State Highway 4, 46, 47 and 49 followed soon after meaning anyone travelling between the Waikato and Manawatu tonight would have to divert through either Napier or New Plymouth. This would add an extra four to five hours to any journeys, NZTA said.
The MetService expected snow to continue falling on the North Island's central plateau until about midnight.
Motorists heading north from Palmerston North tonight were being urged to check on the status of roads at Bulls before heading further north.
