An 11-year-old boy was hit by a car as he got off a school bus on Oroua Rd, Kairanga yesterday.

The boy was taken to Palmerston North Hospital with moderate injuries, a St John spokesman said.

Kimberley Ashcroft, 19, was one of the first on the scene.

She said she was in a paddock when she heard what sounded like two cars crashing into each other.

She said the car was travelling in the opposite direction of the bus when the boy was hit.

''I came running out and he was down on the ground.

''There were no screams at all.

''Both of his shoes flung in different directions.''

She said he was talking and moving his toes shortly after the accident.

''The bus had stopped by the letterbox and the kids just hopped off, usually they run behind the bus, they're pretty bad like that,'' Ashcroft said.

Police are investigating the incident.

Do you have faith in police solving burglaries?

Yes - there's no faulting their commitment.

Mostly, but they are under-resourced.

Sort of - depends on when and where.

Not really - clearly a low priority for them.

Absolutely not.

Not sure - luckily I've never been burgled.
