KEEPING COSY: Burglars stole a bunch of puffer jackets from Kathmandu.

A winter raid for puffer jackets has backfired on an alleged shoplifter and his accomplice.

A 22 year old Paraparaumu man faces a shoplifting charge after allegedly running into Kathmandu on State Highway 1, Otaki, and grabbing armfuls of the popular style of jacket from shelves.

Sergeant Slade Sturmey said the incident happened about 3pm on Tuesday and the man ran outside, ''jumped in a car and took off'' after grabbing about 10 jackets.

Staff called police who launched a search for the vehicle in the town and surrounding areas, he said.

About 4.30pm officers recognised a car with a Paraparaumu driver, Sturmey said.

''They stopped them, spoke to them, and saw the jackets sitting in the vehicle."

He said the 22 year old passenger faces a charge of shoplifting and will appear in Levin District Court tomorrow.

After police searched the car the 30 year old driver from Paraparaumu faced a raft of charges including possessing drug utensils, possession of an offensive weapon, and receiving stolen property.

He was held in custody overnight and was expected to appear in Levin District Court today.

Sturmey said the arrests showed the co-operation between police in the Wellington and Central police districts.
