A soldier has suffered severe hand injuries in a bench saw accident at Linton Military Camp.

A rescue helicopter was sent to the camp to fly the woman, in her late 20s, to Hutt Hospital because of the need for specialist care.

She was working in the base’s School of Military Engineering when the accident happened about 2pm today.

It was unclear how severe the injuries were but the woman had surgery on her hand tonight, a Defence Force spokeswoman said.

Fellow soldiers and her commanding officer were yet to hear how the operation went. The Defence Force will be investigating the accident.
