Building a loo shaped like a strapping bull's bottom so that people can "Leave it all behind in Bulls" is not something Rangitikei District Council is prepared to fork out for.

It would cost at least $226,000 to build a public toilet where visitors walk up a bull's tail and through his backside to find male toilets in one buttock and females' in the other.

It was a vulgar concept that was not worth the money, Bulls ward councillor Jill Strugnell said.

The council has said it will not spend any money on new public toilets in Bulls within the current financial year and even after that does not consider new loos for the town a priority.

Bulls' residential ratepayers were burdened with a 30 per cent rate increase this year.

But money aside, Bulls as a town needs to be careful it doesn't over-state the animal theme, Mrs Strugnell said. "Taihape has a gumboot but doesn't make everything in the town a gumboot."

The town is already riddled with signs making bull puns like "memor-a-bull," and, "const-a-bull" a theme that Bulls and District co-ordinator Bronwyn Meads said has created a point of difference for the town and needs to be reinforced.

At least 12,000 people pass through the town each day and she estimated about 30 per cent of travellers use Bulls as a pit-stop.

"When people are travelling they remember a place based on how nice or how bad the public toilets were. We need these toilets for our town, we will reap the benefits as people stop and then go on to have a browse and hopefully stop for lunch."

She is seeking feedback from the community on whether or not they want the iconic toilets.

As an ex Bulls resident, I agree that the Bulls toilets need to be updated, they are revolting and an embarassment to NZ - international travellers are expected to use them. I recommend that ALL Councillors do a field trip to these toilets and actually use them before they vote, would they take their children or parents here? Now be honest!! If you find the proposed plans offensive Mrs Strugnell, don't rubbish the idea, think outside the square and support your voters by making positive recommendations. It is easy to say "no" and blame costs, let Bulls know how much Council will provide for the upgrade of their toilets and watch this town raise the rest! Do the right thing by Bulls residents and business people and remember. Personally I thought the plans were Adore-a-bull.

I love living in Bulls and love the Bulls pun concept. Its something to be reinforced but also kept in moderation. In other words we need to get the balance right. BULLS NEEDS NEW PUBLIC LOOS!! but isnt this design concept taking it a bit far? What kind of tourists do we want to attract here? Many will find the Bulls Bum amusing but others will be turned off. Sorry to the architect but I'm not keen on the design.

Subway supports the new toilets. So many people first of all ask where the public toilets are. Then they return and beg us to let them use ours. Were not going to stop them of course its good for buisness but the last thing they want is to be running around all of the town looking for a clean loo to go in.The look and the concept means everything to make it easier for more traffic to stop in out town.

Employed as the Bulls and District Coordinator part of my role is to facilitate improvements in the town. I know, as many do the importance of good quality toilets which are accessible 24hrs. Initially the community wanted a big bull as their new toilet, however this was going to be much more expensive and the architect came up with this clever design, which after consulation was agreed on to have full plans prepared. The concept is exciting, it creates a point of difference and enhances our already world famous brand. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the comments that have been posted, and alot of these people are Bulls residents. Lets not forget we care about our image and work hard to make this town more attractive and a good experience for visitors. We have recently had 3 new businesses set up in Bulls so people have confidence in us, New world are planning to develop here, together with other businesses who have undertaken massive expansions. All businesses surrounding the High St toilets, support new ones. The current High Street toilets has got us an award for one of the worst loos in the country, its vital we have new toilets, lets build them now

We need new loo,s, I have also witnessed visitors coming out with not to happy looks on their faces, I agree people do base a good town on the loo's and the community has workied so hard to develop a good name using the Bulls logo and we need to keep moving on it. A Bull face with the doors to the toilets either through the nose or ears is unusual and a memory like our Bulls signs we are known all over the world for these so come on Bulls have a go. It is sad our councilor has no vision. GO BULLS

I would like to think that the council would be a little more forward thinking. Is this just because the Rangitikei community have objected to their new council building? As a real estate agent we try to encourage people to come into our region and regardless of the length of stay - 5 minutes or not, that their experience should be mem-or-a-bull. Our facilities need to portray the image that we want the travelling public to remember us for. If cost is the problem, I would question how many quotes they got and then perhaps go back at it from this angle, the cost seems a little high for loos. Have we builders here that could do it for less? It all sounds like the voice of one is louder than the voice of many.

I think having clean, pleasant to use toilets with some reference to the Bulls theme would be a real draw card for people to stop in Bulls and therefore be likely to spend more money in the nearby shops. Obviously the more publicity this gets the more people will want to stop and use 'the controversial loos', once they are built- so go the controversy!

What an amazing opportunity for one of my favourite NZ towns.

The council need to see the big picture. This story has already travelled across the ditch to Australia. I can guarantee it will go further. What great publicity for this little Rangatikei town - internationally famous.

Bulls - please build your remarkable Bull toilet.

I am in full favour of Bulls having new toilets to facilitate the locals, passing tourists, motorists, and travellers using the Intercity/Newmans coaches. This has been an ongoing saga for Bulls and if anyone has seen the present public toilets in use at the moment you would understand the urgency for better amenities. Having previously worked at the Bulls Info Centre I saw for myself that the present toilets were not up to standard, so I fully support the go ahead for better toilets.

The Bulls toilets should be upgraded and the current concept of the Bulls backside is brilliant.

There's been a lot of talk about Sonny Bill Williams lately. How do you feel about SBW?

He's awesome!

He's over-exposed.

I can take or leave him.

I can't stand him.
