One person has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after a head-on collision between two vehicles on the Saddle Rd this morning.
Emergency services were called to the scene about 11am after a Holden Commodore and a ute collided on the alternative route around the closed Manawatu Gorge.
Police said there was already diesel fuel on the road at the time, which one of the vehicles hit while going around a corner.
This cause it do slide across the centre line and into an oncoming vehicle.
The driver of the Commodore was taken to hospital with minor injuries which included whiplash, police said.
The ute was carrying oil, which was also spilled onto the road.
Contractors went to the scene to spread sand on the spilled fuel to help minimise its effect on traffic.
While traffic was down to one lane and backed up for up to two kilometres at one point, both lanes were open early this afternoon.
