Bus fares between Palmerston North and Ashhurst route are to increase by 50 cents each way for adults and children over five from next month.
The one way fare will rise from $3 to $3.50 for adults and from $1.50 to $2 for children over five when Tranzit Coachlines' new five year contract starts on July 10.
However, SuperGold card holders and under fives will continue to travel for free on the service, which runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Chair of Horizons passenger transport committee Vern Chettleburgh said the increase was the result of rising fuel and running costs.
"Fares on the Ashhurst service have been maintained at their current prices for about a decade.
"Through this time we have seen increases in fuel prices and GST and are now at the stage where we need to raise fares slightly to ensure the service is sustainable,'' he said.
The route and timetable will remain the same.
