Woodville-born award-winning soprano Anna Leese’s passion for song has led her to another love.
In a romance worthy of the stage, the songstress, who has performed all over the world, and with opera greats including Andrea Bocelli, is set to tie the knot.
Leese has returned to New Zealand to star in the NBR New Zealand Opera’s production The Bartered Bride.
The role was fitting for the singer as she has returned home also to celebrate her engagement to her Italian boyfriend, Stefano Guidi, a winemaker at Petrolo Estate winery in Tuscany.
A first ‘‘date’’ of gelato, followed by a motorcycle ride to Civitella and a rendezvous at a Tuscan hilltop castle developed into a marriage proposal for the Kiwi singer.
“It’s quite difficult in my line of work to find a partner who has the patience and understanding to put up with my travelling lifestyle,” Leese said.
“Freelance opera singers can be away from home for months at a time.’’
