Manawatu residents love spending time with their families more than people in almost every other region in New Zealand, a survey of Kiwi past times has revealed.
Vodafone’s What Kiwis Love survey showed 32 per cent of Manawatu people chose family time as the thing they most loved to do in their spare time.
Nationally, Manawatu and Taranaki had the highest percentage of people favouring family time in the Nielsen-conducted survey, which spoke to more than 1500 New Zealanders aged 15 and over.
Reading (13.2 per cent), computer time (6.1 per cent), spending time with friends (6.1 per cent) and sports (5.6 per cent) were the next most popular past times in Manawatu.
Family time also topped the national list with 20 per cent, followed by sports (10 per cent), travel (9 per cent), reading (8 per cent) and friends (7 per cent).
Psychologist Sara Chatwin said the survey, which was commissioned by Vodafone, provided interesting insight into New Zealand culture.
“Family receiving the top spot is a great result and speaks volumes about the commitment Manawatu residents have to family time. Many New Zealanders want more emphasis on positive parenting, and have a strong desire to enjoy and nurture our children and families.”
Rounding out the top ten in Manawatu were fishing and hunting (5 per cent), road trips and travel (4.3 per cent), exercising (4.3 per cent), home entertainment (2.8 per cent) and cooking and baking (2.7 per cent).
Nielsen Regional Director of Consumer and Media Insights Kate Terry said New Zealanders were eager to share their personal stories in the survey.
“It was clear from the results that people from the Manawatu love talking about their favourite things and reliving these experiences, delivering wonderful insights that truly reflect what Kiwis enjoy doing the most.”
Vodafone’s General Manager of Consumer Marketing Aaron Beckman said the research findings captured the spirit of being a New Zealander.
“From playing with children at home to exploring the wonders of our country, the survey responses reveal the definitive things that we as Kiwis actively do to add enjoyment and happiness to our everyday lives.’’
