An Ashhurst woman alerted to a house fire by the smell of smoke and a beeping smoke alarm was able to call 111 to get help.
The fire service was called to a Ulysses Rd property, near Ashhurst about 2.45pm yesterday.
The rural home had damage to the roof, where it is suspected the fire started, and large amounts of roofing iron were removed to fight the blaze and ensure no hot spots remained.
The Fire Service said it took a short amount of time to get the fire under control and there was minimal damage to the inside of the building.
Two fire crews from Bunnythorpe and Palmerston North, as well as a water tanker attended.
