A Palmerston North character home has been left uninhabitable after it was destroyed by a large fire.

Nobody was injured in the fire, which gutted a Napier Rd villa about 11am yesterday.

Ashhurst deputy fire chief Nathan Loach said by the time the fire crew got to the blaze there was little it could do but quell the flames.

"When we arrived, the house was fully engulfed and we worked extensively to put out the fire."

Fire crews from Ashhurst, Palmerston North and Milson fire crews went to the blaze.

The two occupants of the house were waiting outside when emergency staff arrived.

"Understandably, the family are distraught," Mr Loach said.

The fire service is investigating the cause of the fire, but it was not being treated as suspicious.
