Anna Guy's on-air ambitions
Her colleagues are calling her a "natural" after two days behind the microphone, but Anna Guy says she still has plenty to learn about broadcasting.
Ms Guy, the sister of slain Feilding farmer Scott Guy, is spending the week as an intern on More FM Manawatu's breakfast show.
Earlier this year, Ms Guy, who wrapped her second shift at the station this morning, said she was interested in getting into broadcasting.
Her interest was aroused after taking part in media interviews after her brother's death and the murder trial of her estranged husband, Ewen Macdonald. He was acquitted, though admitted other crimes, and the pair have split. "It was interesting to see what happens behind the scenes [in radio]," Ms Guy said. "It just fascinates me.
"I also love the whole entertaining thing, and love making people laugh."
The internship in Palmerston North is for a week so Ms Guy can see how a radio station works. "By the end of the week I should know a bit more, and if I like it or not," she said. Though she was getting a start on radio, Ms Guy said she was keen to look into a television career.
"It would be great to do something where I can be myself and have fun."
Show host Mike West said the station got in touch with Ms Guy after reading about her interest in a broadcasting career.
When told he was getting an intern for the week, West said he had no idea it was to be Ms Guy.
"I thought it would be a schoolgirl, as it is often school-aged people who intern here."
He said her first day went well, with her "natural charisma" a big asset. "She really blew us away. She's very natural and has a great sense of humour." One of the tests on her first day was to announce the 8.30am weather, with her efforts drawing a round of applause from West and his fellow hosts. Her appearance on the show also came soon after the suspected suicide of lawyer Greg King, who successfully defended the murder charge against Macdonald.
When asked on air about Mr King's death, Ms Guy said she had little involvement with him outside the courtroom. "I only actually ever talked to him in the courtroom. I didn't even really know him. I just thought it was so sad." Today's show had a Melbourne Cup theme and also introduced a segment called Anna's Diary.
