Wendy's fights development fee
Wendy's burger chain is challenging Palmerston North City Council over the level of development contributions it has demanded for its Rangitikei St restaurant.
Wendco NZ Ltd's request for a review is to be considered by an extraordinary meeting of the council's hearings committee today.
The request for a hearing is being held behind closed doors.
The council's reason for keeping the public out under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act is to allow negotiations to be carried out.
The application for a review is being conducted a couple of weeks before the planned opening of Wendy's restaurant on November 26.
Committee chairman Bruce Wilson said today's meeting was not a hearing, but a pre-hearing review of the evidence to consider whether the application by Wendco, the company that runs Wendy's, would be considered.
Wendy's spokesman Danny Lendich told the Manawatu Standard last month the company was being asked to pay "a fortune", and was not happy about the amount.
But he said Wendy's did not want to upset anyone in Palmerston North, because it wanted their custom.
