Armed police surrounded a car on Coleman Mall this afternoon during a brief stand off in the centre of Palmerston North.

A blue Holden Commodore had been followed into the one-way street by armed police in two cars about 4.30pm.

A male occupant of the car, who a witness said was wearing a Headhunters t-shirt, was arrested. A female and a toddler were also in the car.

The witness, who did not give her name, said police had followed the Holden into the street and the altercation had ended quickly.

''It was very dramatic,'' she said.

Police at the scene would not comment.
