Believe or not, many people have stories of the supernatural, as a recent story on Stuff.co.nz showed. And some even have photos they believe prove it, while others remain convinced there is a more prosaic, earthly explanation.
Jess recounted stories from a hotel where she worked in Dunedin. She wrote of footsteps in an empty building, doors that would open and close alone, toilets that would flush themselves and disappearing objects.
A British competition this year judged ghost pictures from around the world and chose the image of a ghostly figure in Tudor dress, staring out of a ruined Scottish castle. The picture, taken in May last year, puzzled experts.
Many photos submitted to a similar competition in NZ were images of "orbs” (largely explained by dust on the camera lens), strange patterns in smoke or odd reflections, but others were more difficult to fathom.
Wellington's hobbyist spook finder, Brad Scott, said his work aimed to "disprove" the existence of ghosts.
"Everyone's had some type of experience, whether it's seeing something out the corner of your eye or a door opening. There are genuine people who are terrified," he said.
As lead investigator and founder of NZ Paranormal, he said his background in building and engineering allowed him to "debunk 90 per cent" of ghost claims, but it was the remaining 10 per cent of "unknown" that kept him dead keen.
"Every so often we come across evidence that we just cannot explain."
Logical explanations usually included humidity in houses or malfunctioning electronics.
