An elderly woman is in a critical condition in Palmerston North Hospital following a car crash.
Ashhurst constable Nick James said the 82-year-old woman was travelling toward Ashhurst on Colyton Rd on Wednesday when her vehicle, a Toyota Corona, veered off the road about 3pm.
They were unsure of the cause of the crash, but the woman was alone in the vehicle, the vehicle was mechanically sound, and no other vehicles were involved.
The woman, from Northland, was travelling through the area to visit family in Wairarapa when she crossed the centre line, ran into a ditch and struck some trees, he said.
She was trapped in the vehicle for some time and had to be cut out by the Feilding Volunteer Fire Brigade, James said.
The woman suffered serious injuries, including multiple fractures. She is in a critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Palmerston North Hospital.
