National party candidates nominations close
The cut-off for candidates to throw their hat in the ring for Palmerston North's National Party position has closed.
Just who will contest the Palmerston North electorate in this year's general election is yet to be determined, but interested individuals were required to register their intent to stand for National by midday today.
The exact number of candidates hasn't been announced, but National electorate chairman Rob Woodhouse said there were less than half a dozen nominations made in Palmerston North.
There could be more if people filed nominations to the National party headquarters, but this wouldn't be known until later in the week, he said.
Those who had put their names forward were a "strong, capable bunch" who could all represent the electorate well, Woodhouse said.
Whoever wins the position for National will go up against incumbent Labour MP Iain Lees-Galloway, who is seeking a third term representing Palmerston North.
Pre-selection will take place on May 19 with a formal announcement of the candidate on June 5.
