A woman and a four-year-old child climbed on to the roof of their car and waited for help to arrive after crashing into a deep roadside ditch.

The crash happened on Ashlea Rd, Opiki, south-west of Palmerston North, just before 9am today.

Sergeant Brendan Gerrish said the 35-year-old woman was an inexperienced driver and it appeared she had come off the road, over-corrected on slippery, muddy grass on the roadside and careened into the watery ditch.

Her vehicle landed right-side up, and she managed to get herself, and the child, out of the vehicle, but was unable to get up the unstable bank, he said.

The woman and the child were checked at the scene by St John Ambulance staff, but were not believed to be injured.
