Palmerston North's PhD students will be preparing for a fast-talking task challenging them to present a complicated topic in a short time.

Massey University is holding its annual Three-Minute Thesis competition, or 3MT, at its Manawatu campus next Wednesday.

The competition challenges higher-degree students to present a compelling talk on their thesis and its significance in just three minutes and using only one visual aid, a single PowerPoint slide.

Palmerston North fundamental sciences PhD student Thomas Finn scooped the top honour last year by using blockbuster movies to explain microbiology theories.

Finn used Jurassic Park and The Hunger Games to explain his research, which is about understanding bacterial adaptation.
