Dry July takes on a whole new meaning for Palmerston North, with MetService recording the lowest rainfall for the city in the last 20 years.

Only 19mm of rainfall has been recorded this month, MetService meteorologist John Law said.

''It's obviously a very dry one, it's not the driest.''

The driest was in 1993 when only 11mm was recorded.

This month's rainfall has been particularly low, Law said, the average rainfall for this time of year in Palmertson North is 80mm.

Last year Palmerston North had 54mm of rainfall.

''It is worth bearing in mind we still have a couple days to get a little bit more but not nearly enough to bring us up to our average,'' Law said.
