An Apiti man has been charged in connection with a crash in which Feilding teenager Jessica Watts died.

The 21-year-old man was driving with Watts, 18, on Oroua Valley Rd, Apiti, shortly after midnight on July 11, when they crashed.

Watts was thrown from the vehicle as it plunged down a 5m bank, suffering serious head injuries. She died in Palmerston North Hospital the following day.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan said the man was facing a charge of driving with excess blood alcohol causing death.

He will make his first appearance in the Palmerston North District Court later this month.
