The first candidates debate in the battle for Palmerston North will be held on Sunday. Both incumbent MP Iain Lees-Galloway and city mayor Jono Naylor, his main rival, have confirmed they will take part.

It will be the first opportunity for Palmerston North voters to see a debate between the two main rivals for the Palmerston North electorate in September's election.

Organised by the National Council of Woman's Manawatu branch, the debate will cover issues relating to Manawatu women, the environment and employment issues. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions.

Organisers have invited candidates from the Palmerston North, Rangitikei and Te Tai Hauauru electorates to take part. Confirmed participants are Rangitikei MP Ian McKelvie, his Labour opponent Dr Deborah Russell, Green Party candidate for Te Tai Hauauru Jack McDonald and the Internet Party's Palmerston North candidate, Dr Pani Farvid.

The debate will take place on Sunday at 1pm in the Palmerston North City Library.
