Police are searching for a man who made threats to staff at the Palmerston North Hospital.

Police were called to the hospital about 10am after a "rude and aggressive" man" allegedly threatened staff, central communications acting inspect Bruce McKay said.

Sergeant Jeff Veale said among his comments, the man had threatened to "shoot people", but there was no indication he made such a threat directly to staff.

He was believed to be in an area near the cancer wards.

Police arrived a short time later, but could not locate the man.

It was unclear whether he was visiting family in the wards, or whether he was receiving treatment himself.

Police are still attempting to find him.
