Wind turbine noise sparks complaints

Should the Te Rere Hau wind farm extension get the go-ahead?

More than 100 noise complaints have been laid this year against the Te Rere Hau wind farm east of Palmerston North.
However, the number of complaints will likely have little impact on whether NZ Windfarms can extend the farm.
The company is applying to add 56 turbines on the eastern side of the Tararua Ranges and argues it is complying with its existing consent.
At a hearing on the extension yesterday, Palmerston North City Council senior planner Jeff Baker said there had been 119 noise complaints since May.
The complaints were made as NZ Windfarms boosted the number of turbines on its existing farm to 65.
Mr Baker, who recommended that the Turitea resource consent be declined, said he had no reason to object to the Te Rere Hau extension.
He was satisfied it would comply with noise standards.
Submitter Lee Huffman said the turbines "whine" was annoying and the repetitive "woosh" reminded her of a tap dripping.
The noise was hard to ignore, she said.
WIND FARM EXTENSION
* 56 turbines on the eastern side of the Tararua Ranges, extending the Te Rere Hau wind farm, east of Palmerston North.
* NZ Windfarms already has consent for 97 turbines on the western side of the Tararua Ranges, but 32 of those could go on the eastern extension, if approved.
* Two-bladed turbines from Christchurch supplier Windflow Technology – 47 metres from base to turbine tip.
* Farm extension would cover 300 hectares.
* Joint hearing of Horizons Regional Council and Tararua District Council, received 79 submissions – seven in support, two neutral and 70 against.
